The White-rumped Swiftlet can be divided in eleven subspecies which live in an area that includes Fiji; New Caledonia; Samoa; the Solomon Islands; Tonga; Vanuatu as well as Wallis and Futuna.

The subspecies that formerly lived on the islands of Anatom, Erromango und Tanna in the south of the archipelago is now extinct, but the reasons for that seem to be unknown.

Another subspecies (Aerodramus spodiopygius epiensis (Salomonsen)) still exists on several of Vanuatu's islands, namely Ambrym, Efate, Emae, Epi, Espiritu Santo, Malakula and Malo, but is extinct on Ureparapara.
