The Labrador Tea-leaved Aetheolaena, a small subshrub, is known only from the herbarium material that was collected at the beginning of the 19. century by Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland at an unknown locality in the Pichincha province of Ecuador.

The species could not be found again since, and is most likely extinct.
