The Pichincha Aetheolaena, a small, herbaceous subshrub, is known only from material that was collected in the year 1864 on the Pichincha volcano above the city of Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

The region around Quito has lost most of its natural vegetation, and therefore this plant species may well be extinct as well.
