This species is known only from subfossil bones from the island of Tinian. Bone remains from the neighbouring island of Rota may belong to this, or at least another closely related species.

In life the Tinian Swamphen may have resembled an Australian Swamphen (Porphyrio melanotus), but it had much smaller wings and therefor may have been flightless.
