Pritchardia sp. 'Laysan'

Laysan Fan Palm
(Pritchardia sp.)

syn. -

Hawai'i Islands: Laysan

local name: -

size: ca. 2 m (?) (height)

extinction date: sometimes after 1896

The Hawaiian Islands harbour 23 species of the genus Pritchardia, each of which always restricted to only a single island.

Even the island of Laysan did once harbour a species from this genus, this is proven not least by photographies from the years between 1891 and 1896. These photographies show, surrounded by breeding Laysan Albatrosses (Phoebastria immutabilis (Rothschild)), a small group of about 2 to 3 m tall, wind-swept palms, and are likewise the last record for this unnamed palm species.
