Pritchardia sp. 'Laysan'
|Laysan Fan Palm
Hawai'i Islands: Laysan
|local name: -|
|size: ca. 2 m (?)
extinction date: sometimes after 1896
|The Hawaiian Islands harbour
23 species of the genus Pritchardia, each of which always
restricted to only a single island.
Even the island of Laysan did once harbour a species from this genus, this is proven not least by photographies from the years between 1891 and 1896. These photographies show, surrounded by breeding Laysan Albatrosses (Phoebastria immutabilis (Rothschild)), a small group of about 2 to 3 m tall, wind-swept palms, and are likewise the last record for this unnamed palm species.
