The nominate race of this species lives on the island of Réunion, where it is now threatened with extinction.

The endemic subspecies from the neighbouring island of Mauritius died out, depending on source at 1929 or 1957, after the only larval host plant, the Wood Nettle (Obetia ficifolia), disappeared from the island.
