The genus Sanicula is distributed nearly worldwide, and comprises about fourty species, four of which can exclusively be found on the Hawaiian Islands.

The Kauai Black Snake Root is knonw only from the Kalalau Valley in the Wai'ale'ale Mountains on the island of Kaua'i, and is now considered most probably extinct.
