Saint Helena Hoopoe
(Upupa antaios)

syn. -

distribution:

British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha: Saint Helena

local name: -

size: ca. 37 cm (length)

extinction date: after 1506

Remains of this species were found on the island of Saint Helena.

This hoopoe was exceptionally large and either a poor flier, or maybe even completely flightless. In other respects its lifestyle may have been more or less identical to that of the European Hoopoe (Upupa epops (L.)).

The Saint Helena Hoopoe was probably extirpated by the early settlers resp. their domestic animals.
